Clann Zu

Black Coats and Bandages ~ G7 Welcoming Committee Records

By Ben

Dark mystic magic potion music!

Clann Zu are an Irish based band that was formed in Melbourne using a folk / rock / electric mix.

‘Different’, is one word of one way to describe this album. Clann Zu have musical variations that range from progressive celtic rock (track 3) that stretches almost into psychedelic thrash (track 2 / 5), to slow, profoundly metaphorical ballads using only a piano for accompaniment. Not forgetting the occasional jazz twist. During the more progressive songs you’ll find finely arranged rhythmic (Track 5) sections accompanied with wailing vocals (Declan De Barra) and melodic linear note motifs. The more lyrically laden songs often sound like a more alternative Radiohead.

The overall feel of the album is melancholy, dark and dramatic. There are tones moulded into each song developing desperation and anxiety. This is echoed through the vocal sections and the use of string instruments. There is something interesting being fed into the ears in every song, may it be the alternating rhythms, the poetically heavy lyrics, subtle sound manipulations or the fine range of the vocals (Track 8 / 9). De Barra’s vocal range is a fine addition to the music during this record and shakes off any doubts about capability referred to in Clann Zu’s earlier album release. The record remains true to their ‘different’ sound but moves further away from the folk element.
