Sometimes, “Pop” is a four-letter word. You get scared to use it to describe a
band to a friend, in fear that it will inspire images of Britney Spears and
Justin Timberlake, instead of what it really means: Catchy, popular music.
Everybody Else is pop rock. They aren't the evil portion of it that is out to come
into your home and kill you in your sleep via TRL, they are just good fun rock
and roll that you can't help but sing along with.
In fact, my hands are still sore from the show. The band, without ever asking
once, calls out to the audience to clap along, and to in effect become part
of the band. The vibe in the crowd was great at the show, with everyone
grooving a little bit, and smiles were as prevalent as striped sweaters, which is to
say they were everywhere. The atmosphere was one of a party at which everyone
was good friends. The band was the awesome, fun band on stage at the school
dance in all the movies you wished were your life.
The music isn't the kind that leaves you scraping the depths of your soul,
wondering about the meaning of existence, and debating with Camus and Sartre in
your brain, but it doesn't pretend to be. Singer and guitarist Carrick Moore
Gerety is both pleading and confident in his comments on his relationships
through song, adding a hint of vulnerability to lines like "so I don't wanna see
you on the fire escape/on the hottest august night/cause these memories, sharp
and bright/stick in my lungs/when I gotta run"
The drum machine power of Mike McCormack sat behind the core of every song,
rocking out hard as he could, but still delicate enough to lend his backup
vocals to Moore's emotional outpourings. Kevin Seaton's bass added a nice backbone
to the mostly airy guitar, and gave the music some subdued oomph, though
Seaton, in classic bassist fashion seemed a bit uncomfortable on the stage.
Perhaps it was the gangs of girls at the show. Their fan base seems to be
predominately really cute girls. Sounds like a good show to go to me, fun music,
cute girls, crazy tangoing couples, what's wrong with that?
Nothing but a little jail time.
